VANCOUVER – Six B.C. artists were honoured by Premier Gordon Campbell and Keith Mitchell, chair of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation, at the fourth annual BC Creative Achievement Awards held today at The Studios at Shaw Tower in Vancouver.
“I’m so pleased to highlight these accomplished representatives of B.C.’s creative community,” said Premier Campbell, who is a director of the Foundation. “We can all be proud of the artistic diversity and recognition they bring to our province through their amazing work.”
John Fluevog, internationally acclaimed Vancouver designer, was named the latest recipient of the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction, honouring his vision, innovation and talent in the field of applied art and design. Fluevog’s leadership and enterprise in this field was recognized with the presentation of a specially designed certificate one hundred per cent crafted – from calligraphy to frame – by B.C. artisans using B.C. materials.
The five artists recognized as recipients of this year’s BC Creative Achievement Awards are:
▪ Omer Arbel – produces lighting and furniture designs reflective of both their intrinsic materials and the spaces around them;
▪ Yael Krawkowski – uses colour and texture to produce unique jewelry pieces that create a visual and tactile dialogue;
▪ Sarah Lawless – designs porcelain ceramics that combine ergonomic usability with evocations of growth and weathering;
▪ Kinichi Shigeno – merges rich cultural and natural detail with functionality in his ceramic pieces, reminiscent of Canada and Japan; and
▪ Angelika Werth – creates hand-felted theatrical garments and fibre sculptures with unique themes and inspirations.
Examples of the designers’ work were on display at the awards presentation and will be featured in a travelling showcase that will visit select galleries around the province beginning in June 2008. These recipients each received a $5,000 prize and were granted the use of the BC Creative Achievement Award seal, to signify their creative excellence.
An independent jury chaired by
board member Dr. Robert Belton, Dean of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC
Okanagan, selected the recipients. The jury was comprised of Sam Carter,
artist, craft and design educator, and associate professor at the Emily Carr
Institute of Art + Design; Alex Feldman, partner, Form3 Design; Tony Martin, executive director, Comox
Valley Art Gallery; and Joanna Staniszkis, textile artist and 2007 recipient of
the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction.
The British Columbia Achievement Foundation is an independent foundation established and endowed by the Province of B.C. in 2003. The Creative Achievement Awards are one of five initiatives of the foundation. The others are the BC Community Achievement Awards; the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction recognizing excellence in literary non-fiction; the BC Creative Achievement Award for Aboriginal Art; and Time to Read: the BC Achievement Award for Early Literacy.
