VICTORIA – Premier Gordon Campbell issued the following statement
today to congratulate Victoria’s Simon
Whitfield on winning a silver medal in the Men’s triathlon at the 2008 Olympic
Summer Games in Beijing:
“Simon Whitfield is a legend in
the triathlon, winning the gold in Sydney
in 2000 despite being caught up in a large crash in the bike portion of the
race. His silver-medal performance is an inspiration to all British Columbians.
Competing in one of the most gruelling events in the Olympics, Whitfield
demonstrates that determination and hard work lead to great achievements.
“The
spirit and determination of all the athletes on Team Canada
continues to be reflected in all their performances in Beijing. On behalf of all British Columbians,
congratulations to Simon on his tremendous showing.”
