VICTORIA – Search-and-rescue volunteers, Big Brothers and Sisters, hospice and meal providers and sports enthusiasts will all gain better facilities through $3 million in capital project grants from gaming revenue this year, Solicitor General John van Dongen announced today.
“Non-profit groups contribute to the strength, health and cohesion of our communities in countless ways,” said van Dongen. “These grants from gaming revenues will help to provide and improve the home bases of dozens of volunteer-led organizations, to support their services to people across British Columbia.”
Organizations receiving capital project grants include the Vancouver Friends for Life Society, to renovate the small, old kitchen it uses to serve nutritious meals to many people with life-threatening illnesses; the Nechako Valley Exhibition Society in Vanderhoof, to improve the roof and energy efficiency of an arena used by it and many community groups; and the Kelowna Community Food Bank, to make improvements that will allow it to store more donated food.
Through the ministry’s capital project grant program, non-profit organizations can apply for funds to build a new facility, or to renovate or maintain an existing one. To be eligible, they must deliver existing programs that benefit their communities, and the project must be accessible to the public and maintained on an ongoing basis. Grants of up to $100,000 are available to fund up to 50 per cent of the total cost of projects valued at $20,000 or more. Applicants must secure the remainder of the project funding before applying.
The ministry accepts capital project gaming grant applications each year between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30. Grants are approved by March 31 of the following year.
The capital project grants are among $147.6 million in gaming grants
that approximately 6,850 community organizations across the province will share
in fiscal 2007/08. For a complete list of groups that have received capital
