BC FIRE PREVENTION WEEK PROMOTES HOME SAFETY

VICTORIA – This year’s Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11, will focus on teaching British Columbians how to prevent injury or death from the leading causes of house fires: cooking, heating, electrical equipment and smoking materials, said Minister of Public Safety John van Dongen.

“Fire safety in our homes should be a top priority for all of us,” said van Dongen.  Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time for all British Columbians to make sure their homes are fire safe by installing smoke detectors and having easy access to a fire extinguisher.”

Over the next six days, fire service personnel throughout B.C. will visit local elementary schools and host community events providing students and residents with valuable lessons in preventing home fires.

The B.C. Office of the Fire Commissioner has provided more than 300,000 Fire Safety Starts With You activity booklets to fire departments throughout the province. Fire service personnel will distribute these to schools in their communities. The booklets contain games and activities that promote fire safety to children.

“Teaching our children fire prevention and safety skills is crucial to reducing the number of fire-related injuries and fatalities in British Columbia,” said van Dongen.  “Fire officials recommend families develop and practise a home fire escape plan.”

There were 8,300 residential fires reported in British Columbia between 2004 and 2007, resulting in 611 injuries and 87 fatalities.

Established in Canada in 1919, Fire Prevention Week is an annual national event during the week of October 8, the date of one of the most significant fires in North America, the 1871 Chicago Fire.  The main objective of the week is to raise awareness of fire safety and keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.
