LIVESMART BC HELPS SMALL BUSINESS GO GREEN

VICTORIALiveSmart BC is encouraging small business to take action against climate change and is also partnering with BC Hydro to offer free energy assessments to small businesses, announced Kevin Krueger, Minister of Small Business and Revenue, and Richard Neufeld, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

The small business component of LiveSmart BC offers incentives, ideas and resources for small business owners wishing to green their operations. Throughout October, the provincial website will also profile small business success stories as owners share their experiences and the economic rewards of taking part in British Columbia’s green economy.

“The new LiveSmart BC web pages provide an excellent forum to showcase small business owners who have demonstrated innovation and leadership in going green,” said Krueger. “Green business is smart business in British Columbia, with two-thirds of small businesses in our province working to green their operations.”

To help small businesses take the next steps toward improving energy efficiency, LiveSmart BC and BC Hydro are offering a Small Business Walkthrough program. The walkthroughs – ranging from 30 to 60 minutes in length – are conducted by an energy expert who reviews electricity and gas consumption and provides a mini business case, education, and information about BC Hydro’s Power Smart Product Incentive Program. Walkthroughs are offered until Feb. 28, 2009.

“Providing walkthroughs allows owners and operators the opportunity to develop or build upon energy efficiency solutions specific to each individual business,” said Neufeld. “The walkthroughs will help support government’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020.”

For more information on climate change solutions and to access “Green Business Success Stories” and other resources, visit www.livesmartbc.ca. To register for a small business walkthrough go to www.bchydro.com/save.

October is Small Business Month in British Columbia. Proclaimed by Premier Gordon Campbell for the first time in 2007, Small Business Month recognizes and celebrates the valuable contribution small businesses in all regions make to British Columbia’s growing economy.
