SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM BENEFITS B.C. ARTS STUDENTS

VICTORIA – Eighty-four B.C. arts students will receive a total of over $200,000 in the upcoming school year thanks to the BC Arts Council scholarship program, Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett announced.

“This program is one of many ways that we’re investing in the talents and creativity of British Columbians,” said Bennett. “Through these scholarships, we’re helping to develop the next generation of professional artists who will be at the heart of our province’s vibrant arts and culture community for years to come.”

Scholarships of up to $3,500 will be awarded towards the tuition costs of the successful applicants. Since 1996, the program has distributed more than $2,826,000 to 1,349 students. This year’s program was funded through the BC150 Cultural Fund, a $150-million endowment fund for the arts created in honour of the province’s 150th anniversary as a crown colony.

“The BC150 Cultural Fund is a valuable resource for B.C.’s arts community,” said BC Arts Council chair Don Shumka. “It allows us to increase our support of artists and arts organizations, which also increases the opportunities for British Columbians and visitors to our province to experience all that the arts and culture community has to offer.”

The British Columbia Arts Council is the Province’s primary agency for supporting arts and culture programs in B.C., with an annual funding budget of $13.8 million. To date, the BC Arts Council has provided over $158 million in funding to assist artists and arts and cultural organizations throughout the province.
