PROVINCE HELPS FUND VSO’S ASIA-PACIFIC TOUR

VANCOUVER – The Province is proud to support the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s groundbreaking Asia-Pacific tour, Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett announced at the VSO’s opening night concert of the 2008-09 season.

“The VSO is a cherished cultural institution in our province, and the previous season brought it to new heights, winning both a Grammy and a Juno award,” said Bennett. “And with its upcoming Asia-Pacific tour, the VSO will serve as a cultural ambassador, showcasing the excellence of Canadian performing arts. This tour is a tremendous opportunity leading up to the 2010 Winter Games, and strengthens B.C.’s role as Canada’s Pacific Gateway.”

At the opening night reception, Bennett announced that provincial funding for the tour would be increased to $350,000, thanks to a $100,000 grant through the BC150 Cultural Fund, a $150-million arts endowment fund administered by the BC Arts Council. A $250,000 community gaming grant was previously announced in February. The tour itself takes place this October, with stops in Korea, Macau and China, including the prestigious Beijing Music Festival. The VSO will be the first professional Canadian symphony orchestra to perform in China since 1978.

“International tours are important to symphony orchestras for a wide variety of reasons,” said VSO president and CEO Jeff Alexander. “They bring significant attention to the orchestra’s home country, province and city; assist in establishing long-lasting business relationships in each country for sponsors and funders; and raise the artistic level, administrative capacity, and national and international profile of the orchestra. We are extremely grateful to the Province of British Columbia for its support of this historic event.”

The VSO also receives annual operating assistance from the Province through the BC Arts Council. In the most recent round of funding, announced earlier this month, the VSO received $1.22 million, an increase of $185,000 over the previous year’s funding. Increases in operating assistance to B.C. arts organizations were also made possible through the proceeds of the BC150 Cultural Fund.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1919 and is the largest performing arts organization west of Ontario. It performs over 150 concerts per year with a total annual attendance of more than 200,000 people.  For more information on the VSO, visit www.vancouversymphony.ca.
