$24K IN FUNDING SUPPORTS KOOTENAYS TOURISM PROJECTS

VICTORIA – Tourism projects in the Kootenays are being supported by more than $24,000 in grants through the UBCM Community Tourism Program, announced Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett today.

“Tourism is one of B.C.’s largest and most sustainable industries,” said Bennett. “These latest projects in New Denver, Wasa and Creston will be instrumental in attracting more visitors to our communities and provide us with a central role in helping the Province reach its goal of doubling tourism revenues by 2015.”

The grants were provided as part of the second phase of funding from the $25-million Community Tourism Program, administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) on behalf of the Province. The program supports local priorities to increase tourism activity and build stronger economies.

“Economic diversification is vital for B.C. communities,” said UBCM president Robert Hobson. “UBCM is pleased to see these new investments for tourism marketing, infrastructure and events in the Kootenays.”

With the funding, New Denver’s Centennial Park will get $16,258 for a new gazebo/bandstand, the East Kootenay Regional District will be able to upgrade the Wasa Lions Grounds with just over $4,000, and Creston’s “Invest Kootenay” will receive $3,500 in support.

The UBCM Community Tourism Program was announced by the Premier at the 2004 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention. A total of $12.5 million in grants are awarded during each phase of the Community Tourism Fund.
