B.C. GIVES POWELL RIVER $27,000 FOR TRANSIT

POWELL RIVER – The transit system in Powell River has received $27,000 in additional funding from the Provincial Transit Plan for service improvements, announced Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Kevin Falcon.

Powell River’s transit system connects people throughout the area, from the downtown mall to the Sliammon First Nation to the ferry and onto Texada Island,” said Falcon. “We want to encourage this kind of transit service in smaller communities, allowing people to leave their cars at home and take the bus no matter where they’re going.”

The new funding will be used to supplement the costs of providing the existing transit services in the region, and to encourage the Powell River Transit System and BC Transit to improve service.

The provincial funding announced today comes from $20.5 million in new funding for BC Transit this year. It is also part of the funding from the Provincial Transit Plan, which aims to double transit ridership provincewide by 2020 by increasing choices for travellers. The $14-billion plan also focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cars by 4.7 million tonnes cumulatively by 2020.
