B.C. GIVES SUNSHINE COAST $91,800 FOR TRANSIT

SECHELT – The Sunshine Coast’s transit system has received $91,800 in additional funding from the Provincial Transit Plan for service improvements, announced Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Kevin Falcon.

“People in small communities such as Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay are just as busy as people in larger centres,” said Falcon. “They need access to reliable and convenient transit services, and this money will help pay for that.”

The new funding will be used to supplement the costs of providing the existing transit services in the region, and to encourage the Sunshine Coast Transit System and BC Transit to improve service.

The provincial funding announced today comes from $20.5 million in new funding for BC Transit this year. It is also part of the funding from the Provincial Transit Plan, which aims to double transit ridership provincewide by 2020 by increasing choices for travellers. The $14-billion plan also focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cars by 4.7 million tonnes cumulatively by 2020.
