B.C. GIVES $99,000 FOR BETTER CAMPBELL RIVER TRANSIT

CAMPBELL RIVER – Transit riders in Campbell River will be able to catch a bus every 30 minutes on two major routes all day, thanks to $99,000 in new funding announced by Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Kevin Falcon today.

The Campbell River Transit System and BC Transit will expand service on the Alder and Rockland routes to 30-minute service all day in early 2009. The routes now have a bus running every 30 minutes only at peak periods. The service increase will cost a total of $212,000. The Province is giving $99,000, while the City of Campbell River and passenger fares will contribute the remaining funds.

“People in Campbell River lead busy lives,” said Falcon. “We can only expect them to take the bus if it comes frequently enough to get them where they need to go on time. This service increase will give riders an efficient travel option throughout the day.”

The provincial funding announced today comes from $20.5 million in new funding for BC Transit this year. It is also part of the funding from the Provincial Transit Plan, which aims to double transit ridership provincewide by 2020 by increasing choices for travellers. The $14-billion plan also focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cars by 4.7 million tonnes cumulatively by 2020.
