PROVINCE GIVES $51,800 TO COWICHAN VALLEY TRANSIT

DUNCAN – The transit system in the Cowichan Valley has received $51,800 in additional funding from the Provincial Transit Plan for service improvements, announced Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Kevin Falcon.

“The Cowichan Valley continues to attract new residents,” said Falcon. “This new money encourages the local transit system to continue expanding to meet the needs of a growing population.”

The new funding will be used to supplement the costs of providing the existing transit services in the region, and to encourage the Cowichan Valley Transit System and BC Transit to improve service.

The provincial funding announced today comes from $20.5 million in new funding for BC Transit this year. It is also part of the funding from the Provincial Transit Plan, which aims to double transit ridership provincewide by 2020 by increasing choices for travellers. The $14-billion plan also focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cars by 4.7 million tonnes cumulatively by 2020.
