SOUTHBOUND HWY 99 HOV LANE OPENS TO MORE COMMUTERS

RICHMOND – Starting Sept. 2, commuters using the Massey Tunnel may use the southbound high-occupancy vehicle lane for two months, if they carpool with at least one other person.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is conducting a pilot project on Highway 99 which will allow vehicles with two or more occupants to use the southbound high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane for 60 days. The lane is usually reserved to vehicles with three or more occupants, and runs roughly between Westminster Highway south to the Steveston Interchange.

The pilot project will test whether traffic flow will improve if more commuters are allowed access to the lane, and how the increased use of the lane will affect TransLink’s bus service, which also uses the lane. The ministry will work closely with TransLink to monitor bus and traffic flow.

In order to lessen impact on buses, the ministry is extending a bus-only lane southbound from the Steveston Interchange to the mouth of the Massey Tunnel.
