VICTORIA – An award winning concert band from L.V. Rogers secondary school in Nelson will take part in the Beijing Cultural Olympiad next month with help from a $50,000 provincial grant, announced Stan Hagen, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts.
“This talented concert band from Nelson was the only band from British Columbia to be invited to take part in this prestigious event,” said Hagen. “We’re proud this group of gifted young people will be representing B.C. in Beijing and we’re thrilled to be able to support them in this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
The $50,000 grant comes from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Community Gaming Grants, which support programs in arts, culture and sport; human and social services; public safety; and the environment. The Kiwanis Club of Penticton received the grant and will donate it to the L.V. Rogers Parent Advisory Council.
The band, which is one of only six in Canada invited to Beijing, has raised $30,000 for the trip through various community fundraisers. After receiving the invitation to take part in the Cultural Olympiad last February, the band approached a number of sources for funding, but was unsuccessful.
“B.C. has a vibrant and thriving arts community, and as one of the top school bands in Canada, the L.V. Rogers concert band will showcase some of our talent to the world in Beijing,” added Hagen.
The Beijing Cultural Olympiad will kick-off the countdown to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. While in China, the L.V. Rogers band will perform for a number of audiences in Beijing and Shanghai.
