BC150 SUPPORTS COMMUNITY ARTS

VICTORIA – A partnership between BC150 and the Assembly of BC Arts Councils is offering a $190,000 grant program to support community and regional arts activities, announced Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen.

“Through the BC150 Community Arts Grant, exciting new arts projects will bring B.C.’s rich history to life,” said Hagen. “These projects will connect to BC150 celebrations in every corner of the province – and leave a legacy of arts and cultural projects for future audiences to enjoy.”

BC150 Community Arts Grant funding is available to community and regional arts councils and Aboriginal cultural centres. Eligible projects span a variety of disciplines, including visual art exhibitions, dance, musical or theatre productions and presentations, publication projects (print or electronic) including artists’ books, catalogues, monographs and anthologies, and media arts projects.

Grants will be administered by the Assembly of BC Arts Councils. Deadline for applications is April 18, 2008; projects must be completed by Dec. 31, 2008. The grants will provide a maximum of $10,000 and up to 75 per cent of total project costs.

“We are thrilled about partnering with BC150 to celebrate artistic achievement in our province,” said Assembly of BC Arts Councils president Deb Borsos. “British Columbia arts organizations will be working together to celebrate this historic anniversary through music, theatre, written and visual arts, as well as multimedia and other exciting new art forms.”

The BC150 Community Arts Grant program complements BC150 festivities taking place around British Columbia in 2008, which will be based on five key pillars: heritage, communities, Aboriginal people, cultural diversity, and arts and culture.

Other BC150 initiatives that will commemorate creative achievement include the B.C. Book Prizes and Authors’ Tour, which recognizes the contribution of B.C. authors and publishers in chronicling and celebrating our diverse history, and a Ministry of Education-sponsored student film project and festival called Reel Vue that invites students to submit art, music and writing on the theme of history.

BC150 is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.’s cultural diversity, community strength and achievement.
