LAKE COWICHAN – Lake Cowichan will be receiving a $10,000 BC150 Celebration Grant for the Spirit of Cowichan Days, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts Stan Hagen announced today.
“We believe that history was written locally and should be
celebrated locally,” said Hagen. “To do that, we have engaged municipalities
and community partners to bring BC150 to life across the province.”
BC150 Celebration Grants support the BC150 pillars of heritage, communities, multiculturalism, Aboriginal people, and arts and culture; and reflect the unique nature of each British Columbia community.
The Spirit of Cowichan Days starts on May 1 and is a celebration of community spirit. It launches the 20-foot Spirit Pole that will tour the province stopping in 47 communities, with First Nation Carvers helping members of the public carve the pole before its journey to the 2008 Aboriginal Games.
To qualify for a BC150 Celebration Grant, organizations must be non-profit, operate primarily for community benefit and have a voluntary, broad-based membership. Organizations can apply until Aug. 31, 2008. Grants of up to $10,000 are available through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. BC150 is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the
founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community in
B.C. is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.’s cultural
diversity, community strength and widespread achievement. For more information
