MAJOR AWARDS TO RESEARCHERS AT TWO B.C. INSTITUTES

 


Here are some of the top awards received by doctors and researchers connected with the Child & Family Research Institute and the B.C. Mental Health & Addictions Research Institute in 2008:

 

·        Dr. Michael Hayden, medical genetics – Canada’s Health Researcher of the Year in biomedical and clinical research, named by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The honour includes a $500,000 Michael Smith Prize in Health Research.

·        Dr. Kishore Mulpuri, orthopedic surgery the Angela S.M. Kuo Memorial Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.

·        Dr. Diane Finegood, diabetes and obesity research and member of the board of directors of the Child & Family Research Institute the Frederick G. Banting Award, the Canadian Diabetes Association’s highest award for research.

·        Dr. Robert Peterson, head of Child Health BC – newly appointed as chair of the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee.

·        Dr. Jan Friedman, medical genetics – the Bock Prize and Lectureship in Developmental Biology and Genetics, Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children. He was also named Robert L. Brent Lecturer by the international Teratology Society.

·        Dr. Bill Honer, neurobiology and mechanisms of illness in schizophrenia – the Heinz Lehmann Award, from the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

·        Dr. Jehannine Austin, genetic counselling for families affected by major mental illness – Maud Menten New Investigator Prize, from the Canadian Institute of Health Research.
