VICTORIA – Forty-seven community-based organizations and First Nations
throughout British Columbia will be sharing just under $665,000 in Trees for
Tomorrow funding for greening projects, helping the Province meet its goal of
planting four million trees in the next five years, announced Community
Development Minister Kevin Krueger.
“Trees for Tomorrow is
an innovative provincial program that has the dual purpose of beautifying public
spaces while at the same time promoting the absorption of greenhouse gases
through tree planting,” said Krueger. “Green initiatives such as Trees for
Tomorrow are an important part of the Province’s strategy to create a healthier

The grants announced
today are in addition to the more than $2.2 million provided to 82 local
governments through the first round of the Trees for Tomorrow program.
A five-year, $13 million program, Trees for
Tomorrow is a province of B.C. initiative designed to support B.C. communities
in the planting of millions of trees in school yards, hospital grounds, civic parks, campuses,
parking lots and other public spaces.
This initiative is part of the province’s
strategy to reduce greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere in B.C. by at least
33 per cent below current levels by 2020, which will also assist communities in
meeting their climate action charter obligations.
The program is implemented through an
innovative partnership: Evergreen, a national not-for-profit organization, is
providing technical assistance to all participating communities. The Youth
Climate Leadership Alliance is involved by undertaking field research, and
mitigation work related to climate action.
