SICAMOUS – The $5.7-million Eagle Valley Manor will
provide Sicamous seniors with 12 new assisted living units, which officially
opened today thanks to funding from provincial and community partners,
announced George Abbott, Minister of Health Services and MLA for Shuswap.
“This development meets an important need in the community and is an
integral part of our continuum of care for seniors,” said George Abbott,
Minister of Health Services and MLA for Shuswap. “The assisted living units at
Eagle Valley Manor will allow seniors to maintain their independence while
living close to family and friends, with convenient access to support and
personal care services.”
Eagle Valley Manor is funded under Independent Living BC, a
housing-for-health program that meets the needs of lower-income seniors and
people with disabilities by providing a middle option between home support and
residential care. Assisted living units are self-contained apartments where
residents receive meals, housekeeping and laundry services, a 24-hour response
system, and assistance with medications.
“By adding assisted living in our community, we are taking one more step
to ensure that Sicamous remains an affordable and liveable city at any age of
care level,” said Mayor Malcolm MacLeod, District of Sicamous. “Many thanks to
the Eagle Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society for all their hard work in
caring for our seniors.”
The District of Sicamous is providing tax-exempt status for the
building. Interior Health is funding personal care and hospitality services for
the 12 assisted living units.
“Seniors in our communities tell us that safe and affordable housing
options are needed to allow them to live independently for as long as they
can,” said Norman Embree, board chair of Interior Health. “I am pleased to see
these assisted living units come to Sicamous and to have the opportunity for us
to offer more care need options to local residents.”
Eagle Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society owns and operates three
seniors’ complexes including Eagle Valley Manor. The society also owns and
operates Eagle Valley Haven and the Lodge, both in Sicamous.
“
In 2008, the provincial government met its commitment to provide 5,000 net-new
residential care beds, assisted living units, supportive housing and
home support. The Province has opened 5,896 additional new beds and
units across B.C. since 2001. In total, 12,435 new and replacement beds and
units have been opened, replacing many that were old and unsuitable.
