HOUSING FUND GRANT OF $855,000 FOR NELSON

NELSON – The Province is providing a $855,000-grant from the Housing Endowment Fund (HEF) for an innovative project in Nelson, Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman announced today.

“We are continuously receiving proposals for housing solutions that do not fall under any existing programs, so the endowment fund provides one-time funding for projects that serve unique needs that are not currently being met,” said Coleman. “Seniors who need a little bit of extra help, but who are not ready for assisted living, will receive additional support as a result of this project in Nelson.”

Golden Life Management is receiving $855,000 for its Lake View Village development. The funding will help supplement rents for 13 studio suites for seniors who need some extra help to live independently, but do not need the higher level of care provided at assisted living or residential care residences.

The $250-million Housing Endowment Fund was established in the 2007 Provincial Budget. The fund generates investment revenue, which is used to fund new ideas and support innovative housing solutions that meet the diverse housing needs of British Columbians. To date, more than $12 million has been awarded to 25 projects.

Through Housing Matters BC, the total provincial contribution to affordable housing and shelter in Budget 2009 is $469 million, more than four times as much as in 2001. This consists of an operating contribution of $319 million, plus a capital contribution of $150 million.
