The Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) critical care tower and
renovations will see a new state-of-the-art tower constructed on the hospital
site, as well as renovations to parts of the existing hospital. The project
will add 151 new beds and approximately 25,000 sq. metres (274,000 sq. feet) of
new construction, and will include:
New critical care tower:
- A new emergency department and perinatal
centre on the first two floors:
- The
emergency department will be almost five times the size of the existing
one, and will feature a separate pediatric ER and dedicated mental health
unit, plus a “fast track” minor treatment unit and major trauma area.
- A total of
48 NICU beds, including 28 new and 16 net new (12 NICU beds will be
relocated from Royal Columbian Hospital, as specialized, intensive care
neonatal services become centralized at SMH).
- Three
additional floors above the ER and perinatal centre, to accommodate:
- 85 new inpatient
beds, including 20 high dependency beds and 25 adult ICU beds (15 of
which will be relocated from the old ICU space).
- Additional
academic space, which, when complete, will become part of FH’s clinical
academic campus, working in conjunction with Royal Columbian Hospital to
provide additional post-graduate medical training at a satellite campus of
the provincial medical school.
- Rooftop
helipad.
- Two
additional underground floors, which will accommodate a new and expanded
laboratory and underground parking (350 stalls).
Renovations on portions of the existing hospital:
- Renovations
to the old ICU space to provide an additional 15 inpatient beds.
- An expanded
family birthing unit/maternity ward, which will add 13 new obstetrics
beds, birthing rooms and a second maternal operating room.
- Additional
space for ER administrative and support services space.
- An expanded
pharmacy services department, data centre, and sterile processing unit.
- Expanded main
entrance services, to include information services, security services and
volunteer resources.
Total new beds for SMH: 151
- 80
medical/surgical.
- 28 NICU (16
net new).
- 20 high-dependency.
- 13 obstetric.
- 10 ICU.
