PREMIER'S STATEMENT ON PASSING OF JUDGE HUGH STANSFIELD

VANCOUVER – Premier Gordon Campbell made the following statement today on the death of Hugh Stansfield, chief judge of the B.C. Provincial Court:

“It’s with great sadness we mourn the passing of Chief Judge Stansfield, and I join his colleagues, family and friends in honouring the memory of a respected member of our legal system.

“In his 29 years as a lawyer and judge in the provincial court, Hugh earned a well-deserved reputation for fairness and for his passion for judicial education. He served as chair of the Judges’ Education Committee and presented on judicial education in B.C. and nationally through the National Judicial Institute.

“Throughout his career, Hugh contributed to improving our province’s justice system for the benefit of all British Columbians. He leaves a legacy that will endure and will be remembered.”
