VICTORIA – The provincial government is providing an additional $15.1 million for arts, culture and heritage through supplementary estimates, Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett announced today.
“Encouraging a vibrant arts and culture scene as well as the conservation of our heritage properties are important steps to ensuring the vitality, diversity and sustainability of our communities,” said Bennett. “Arts and culture and heritage embody the past, present and future of British Columbia’s people, places and ways of life.”
A total of $7 million of this supplementary estimates funding will be distributed through the BC Arts Council. The council distributes grants to nearly 1,000 artists and arts and culture organizations across the province.
“With this supplementary funding, we will be able to continue supporting artists and organizations from every region of British Columbia,” said BC Arts Council chairman Donald Shumka.
The remaining $8.1 million of this funding will go to the conservation and management of heritage properties across British Columbia.
The supplementary estimates can be part of the budgetary process, where funds in a current fiscal year can be approved to be spent in addition to approved ministry budgets. For more information on the budget, visit: www.bcbudget.gov.bc.ca/2009/.
