WINNERS OF BC150 YOUTH VIDEO CONTEST ANNOUNCED

VICTORIA – Five Grade 12 students from across the province have been chosen as winners of the BC150 Youth Video Contest announced Bill Bennett, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, today.

“The BC150 Youth Video Contest was an opportunity for all Grade 12 students to tell their stories and share what B.C. means to them,” said Bennett. “We received some amazing videos from students across the province and I want to congratulate all who participated.”

In November 2008, Grade 12 students across the province were invited to submit a short video – up to three minutes in length – representing “What B.C. Means to Me.” The following students have each won $2,500 for themselves and an additional $2,000 for their school:

·        Dustin Brons – Lord Byng Secondary (Vancouver)

·        Amy Wang – Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary (Surrey)

·        Kelcie Hudson – Wellington Secondary (Nanaimo)

·        Tchadas Leo – Carihi Secondary (Campbell River)

·        Josh Havelka – Reynolds Secondary (Victoria)

Chatelech Secondary in Sechelt will also receive $1,500 as the winner of a random draw of all participating schools. Adjudication of all entries was conducted by an external committee chaired by Bill Thumm, manager of the Capilano University Film Centre.

"The quality of the contest submissions from across the province impressed us all,” said Thumm. “It indicates an ever-increasing rate of visual literacy among B.C.'s secondary students – something to be very proud of.”

The winning videos have been posted on the BC150 website at www.BC150.ca.
