B.C. REGIONS SHARE $20M FOR IMMEDIATE JOBS PROGRAM

TERRACE – The Province is providing $20 million across British Columbia as an economic investment in local transportation projects, with the Northwest receiving $2.75 million to put people to work immediately, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Kevin Falcon announced today.

“In addition to the rehabilitation and expansion projects we are delivering in the Northwest, the Province also recognizes the need to provide some opportunities for short-term, direct, local economic stimulation,” said Falcon. “This means putting hundreds of local people to work in their communities, immediately.”

Of the $2.75 million going to the Northwest, over $2.25 million has been allocated for the area bordered by the Queen Charlotte Islands, east to Burns Lake and north to Dease Lake. The Vanderhoof and Fort St. James areas will receive almost $500,000.

“These specialized funds will be focused on activities to improve the transportation network, hiring local people, equipment and contractors,” said Falcon. “These are projects that don’t require a lot of lead time – just the money, labour and equipment to make them happen.”

This program will generate hundreds of short-term local jobs across the province. Projects will include pavement patching, roadside brushing, removal of dangerous trees, gravel crushing and hauling, bridge upgrading, culvert replacements and other drainage improvements.

This economic and infrastructure investment program supports the provincial strategy to provide significant investments for B.C.’s infrastructure by creating real jobs that will instill confidence in our provincial economy during these challenging times.
