CRAIGFLOWER MANOR RECEIVES $250,000 TO REPAIR FIRE DAMAGE

Victoria – Craigflower Manor will receive up to $250,000 in joint federal and provincial support to cover the cost of repairing damage caused by a January fire, Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Kevin Krueger announced today.

“Craigflower Manor is one of the oldest buildings in B.C., and is a valuable attraction among the province’s diverse collection of heritage sites,” said Krueger. “Matched with the $125,000 committed by the Province, the federal grant will provide the financial resources needed to repair fire damage to conserve this treasured heritage site.”

Craigflower Manor is a provincially-owned heritage property and a national historic site of Canada. The two-storey log farm house is one of the last remaining links to original settlement farms established by the Hudson Bay Company in the 1850s.

In March 2009, the Province, with participation from community partners, raised a total of $125,000 in monetary support and services to assist with the cost of fire-damage repairs for the heritage site. This amount was used in the Province’s application for matching federal funding under the National Historic Sites of Canada Cost-Sharing Program delivered by Parks Canada. The federal and provincial contributions provide a combined total of $250,000 for the Craigflower Manor restoration project.

The fire at Craigflower Manor broke out Jan. 23, 2009 under the main interior stairwell. The blaze was quickly extinguished by the View Royal fire department, with the assistance of the Colwood and Esquimalt fire departments. The fire damaged the interior main floor, staircase, kitchen and dining room and caused substantial smoke and soot damage, mainly upstairs. In the days following, the firefighters were publicly acknowledged by the Province for their extraordinary efforts in saving Craigflower Manor.

Craigflower Manor is managed and operated by The Land Conservancy under a 15-year provincial contract that started in 2003.
