MINE RESCUE AWARDS SHOWCASE THE BEST IN B.C.

FERNIE – B.C.’s best mine rescue and first aid teams were honoured in Fernie after an intense day of competition, Randy Hawes, Minister of State for Mining, announced today.

“I attended the competitions and saw firsthand what an incredibly exciting and gruelling effort goes into preparing for these events,” said Hawes. “Mining is one of B.C.’s safest heavy industries, and we are incredibly proud of the work done in mines across the province. Congratulations to the weekend’s participants and, of course, the winners.”

The 55th Annual Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition brought together provincial mine rescue and first aid teams for an all-day event. The competition was designed to simulate real-life situations and test skills in first aid, extrication, firefighting, rope work and general mine rescue knowledge. Trophies were awarded to the best three-person miner first aid team, as well as for excellence in surface and underground mine rescue.

The Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition and the Annual Mine Safety Awards recognize the dedication of an industry committed to health and safety best practices across the province.

Under the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in B.C., all mines are required to provide emergency response capability. The industry’s commitment to safety is reflected in the numbers. As of 2008, the industry had an injury rate of 1.7 per 100 person-years for major open pit and underground mines combined. This is one of the lowest rates in heavy industry.
