ARTS IN THE PARKS CELEBRATES BC PARKS’ CENTENNIAL

VICTORIA – Provincial parks across British Columbia will feature arts and cultural events in celebration of BC Parks’ centennial with $120,000 in provincial funding, announced Minister of Environment Barry Penner and Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Kevin Krueger today.

“Arts in the Parks will be an exciting addition to our BC Parks 100 celebration,” said Penner. “These events will give people another reason to visit our provincial parks. I encourage everyone to get involved in their local BC Parks celebration.”

Arts in the Parks is being jointly funded with $60,000 from the Ministry of Environment and $60,000 from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. The program will be administered by the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, with a call for submissions in the fall. The selected events will run from March to December 2011.

“There are many significant cultural experiences that British Columbians enjoy in BC Parks, from viewing First Nations petroglyphs to participating in interpretative park programs,” said Krueger. “Arts in the Parks will help British Columbians build new memories with events in parks across the province.”

The Assembly of BC Arts Councils will provide grants of up to $5,000 to individual artists, performers or groups for projects that show how parks help shape the arts, culture and character of B.C.’s communities. Grants will be awarded through a peer-review process. The funding will cover up to 75 per cent of a project’s total cost.

“We’re honoured to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of BC Parks,” said Junko Sakamoto, executive director of the Assembly of BC Arts Councils. “We’re very excited to see what British Columbian artists will bring to the parks.”

BC Parks 100 celebrations and events will be held in parks across the province throughout 2010 and 2011. The celebrations will engage a diversity of rural and urban communities, First Nations, youth and sector areas such as arts, heritage, and tourism and conservation projects.
