UVIC RATIFIES AGREEMENT WITH FACULTY ASSOCIATION
VICTORIA – A two-year agreement under the Province’s 2010 mandate has been ratified between the University of Victoria and members of the UVic Faculty Association, announced Finance Minister Colin Hansen.
“I’m pleased with the progress that negotiators are making on negotiating new agreements within our current mandate,” said Hansen. “This is another agreement ratified under the 2010 mandate, and it shows that the parties at the table can reach a voluntarily negotiated deal.”
The agreement covers approximately 800 employees represented by UVic’s Faculty Association (UVIC-FA). UVIC-FA members include faculty members and professional librarians.
“It is very good news that UVic and their faculty association have ratified an agreement,” said Advanced Education and Labour Market Development Minister Moira Stilwell. “University faculty play a critical role in post-secondary education in B.C. This agreement demonstrates the faculty’s commitment to students.”
Government has already announced its intention to control spending on wages during this round of bargaining. To protect jobs and preserve vital services British Columbians depend on, government does not have any funding for new wage increases as collective agreements are renewed.
There are approximately 306,000 unionized workers in occupations throughout B.C.’s public sector, the great majority of which have agreements that expire between March 31, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2010. Just over half of B.C.’s public sector employees have now renegotiated agreements that were set to expire in 2010, including major agreements in the health sector and the public service.
