GRANTS SUPPORT ARTS AND HERITAGE ACROSS BRITISH COLUMBIA
VICTORIA – Archivists and artists, dancers and drummers in the North, Interior, Central and Kootenay regions of British Columbia will receive $747,760 in Community Gaming Grants supporting youth arts and culture, fairs, festivals and museums.
More than 175 organizations across British Columbia will receive grants to foster talent and support events that celebrate local traditions and customs, Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development, announced today.
The Province has budgeted $7.4 million more than last year for gaming grants - a total of $120 million for 2010-2011. The grants will fund approximately 6,000 organizations that support people in need, public safety, youth arts and sports, education and parent and district advisory councils.
The category Arts and Culture encompasses youth programs and fairs and festivals suitable for all ages that celebrate community, regional or cultural characteristics, such as the Rossland Gold Fever Follies and the Vernon Winter Carnival. Museums and historical societies are also eligible for funding. Bella Coola, Nelson, Hudson’s Hope, Golden, and Osoyoos are among the communities that received grants to conserve local history.
Effective April 1, 2010, the Province combined bingo affiliation and direct access grants into the Community Gaming Grant program to ensure all community groups have fair and equitable access to gaming funds. This round of grants includes payments honouring multi-year grant commitments made prior to the Community Gaming Grant program.
To date, approximately $57 million has been allocated to gaming grants for 2010-2011. The Province considers applications for community gaming grants four times per year, with each intake devoted to a specific sector.
