LOCAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UNIT UP AND RUNNING
VICTORIA – A new Domestic Violence Unit in the Capital Regional District (CRD) is helping to protect people in high-risk domestic violence situations.
For the first time in the CRD, the unit is conducting investigations, formal risk assessments, safety planning and victim-specific support for high-risk cases. A police sergeant, two investigators, two victim-service workers and a child-welfare worker all liaise with RCMP and local police departments in the Greater Victoria area.
The new unit is part of the government's domestic violence action plan, announced this past January. The plan followed on the heels of the Lee Park inquest and recommendations from the Representative for Children and Youth, as well as other recommendations from other reports.
The government announced in January $25,000 to help establish the Domestic Violence Unit in the CRD.
In 2009, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General spent more than $43.5 million for services to victims of violence, a $2.8-million increase over 2008.
