WORK BEGINS TO BUILD MEADOW CREEK BRIDGE

PENDER HARBOUR – The Province has awarded a $1.19-million contract to construct the Meadow Creek Bridge on Garden Bay Road in Pender Harbour, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond announced today.

“Garden Bay Road is a vital route for residents, commercial traffic and tourists,” said Bond. “The new Meadow Creek Bridge will ensure the corridor continues to serve as a reliable route and replace the existing culvert, ensuring the sustainability of a valuable fish stream.”

The project will replace the two existing culverts with a new concrete structure. This will allow fish to pass under this crossing and help prevent flooding in the area.

A contract was awarded to BG MacDonald Services Ltd. of Kelowna. Work is expected to begin this July and finish by December. Motorists can expect single-lane alternating traffic with minor delays during construction.

The federal contribution to this project comes from the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure projects. Since March 2009, almost 400 projects have received a total federal investment of over $500 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund across British Columbia.

Since October 2008, over $5.3 billion in infrastructure projects have been announced across British Columbia, which are estimated to create more than 34,000 jobs over the life of the projects.

Motorists are advised to visit www.drivebc.ca for provincial highway conditions and traffic updates.
