Investing in safety at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology
MERRITT – Students at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology will benefit from improved and upgraded campus facilities, thanks to $47,000 in capital funding that is part of government’s investment in B.C.’s post-secondary infrastructure this year.
The upgrade work will ensure campus infrastructure and operational systems are performing at optimal levels, which is important to keep our campuses in top operating shape. Work includes providing improved access from the main building to parking and student residences at the Eagles’ Perch campus.
The institute and government also announced today how $500,000 in one-time funding – http://ow.ly/dbutB – will be used to offer short-term training to prepare workers for jobs in their regions. The institute expects to create seats in a variety of fields over the coming year, including chemical addictions, Aboriginal economic development, office administration and a certificate program in environmental resource technology to train field technicians in the forestry and mining sectors.
More than $3.4 million has been invested in capital projects at the institute’s campuses in Merritt and Burnaby since 2001, including funding for construction of a student residence complex, day-care space and Aboriginal gathering place.
Quotes:
Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of Advanced Education —
“We are working to expand B.C.’s economy, and believe that by investing in schools like the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, we’re providing British Columbians with the tools they need to meet the demands of employers and be successful in their personal and working lives.”
Ken Tourand, president, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology —
“The safety of students, staff, and visitors on campus is always a priority for NVIT. We are pleased that the funding provided has allowed the institute to construct defined walkways that increase accessibility and safety between the main building, parking area, and NVIT’s student residences. These walkways were a much needed enhancement to the Merritt campus, and we are grateful that the Ministry saw on-campus safety as a priority as well.”
