Agreement reached in landlord penalty decision

VICTORIA – The Residential Tenancy Branch and the owner of 12975 - 106th Ave., Surrey, have signed an agreement that ensures the landlord will repair and maintain this building.

The B.C. government levied the first-ever administrative penalty of $115,000 against the landlord in March 2012 after he failed to comply with an order from the Residential Tenancy Branch. That order required the landlord to make repairs to the rental property.

Under the agreement, the landlord:

·         Is expected to complete all work ordered on the property by November 2012.

·         Has offered affected tenants a resettlement package.

·         Will provide the Residential Tenancy Branch with a monthly report on the work done at the site.

If the landlord complies with the requirements in the agreement, then the financial portion of the administrative penalty will be reduced to zero after two years.
