BC Coroners Service confirms identity of rafting victim

VICTORIA – The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of the woman who died following a whitewater rafting accident on June 23, 2012.

The woman has been identified as Mary Patricia Thibault, aged 50, of Calgary, Alberta.

Ms. Thibault was one of a party of about 40 customers of a commercial whitewater rafting operation who were out on the Kicking Horse River about 20 kilometres east of Golden.

At about 3 p.m. on June 23, the raft in which Ms. Thibault was riding – one of five in the group – overturned, throwing Ms. Thibault, seven other passengers and a guide into the river.

All were rescued quickly and Ms. Thibault was immediately transported to hospital in Golden, but she could not be revived. The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP are continuing to investigate this death.

The family of Ms. Thibault has been notified of her death. On behalf of the family, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy.
