BC Coroners Service confirms identity of drowning victim

VICTORIA – The BC Coroners Service has confirmed that the body found off the Oak Bay waterfront on Aug. 6, 2012, is that of a missing canoeist.

The deceased male is Iman Bulghani, aged 19, of Victoria.

Mr. Bulghani and a friend had been canoeing off Ten Mile Point on the evening of July 6, 2012, when a large wave swamped their canoe. The friend was rescued successfully, but a search at the time had failed to find Mr. Bulghani.

At about 5 p.m. on Aug. 6, 2012, a kayaker spotted a body floating near Tod Island off the waterfront just south of where Mr. Bulghani was last seen. A police marine unit was able to recover the body.

The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate this death.

The family of Mr. Bulghani has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

The BC Coroners Service expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Bulghani and its appreciation to search and rescue personnel for their assistance.
