BC Coroners Service announces inquest into motor vehicle death

VICTORIA – The BC Coroners Service has announced an inquest into the death of Ashley Christine Guiboche.

The inquest is scheduled to begin on Feb. 4, 2013, at the Coroners Court in Burnaby.

The inquest arises out of a motor vehicle incident which occurred on Jan. 31, 2011. Ms. Guiboche, then aged 18, was a pedestrian who was crossing King George Boulevard near the King George Skytrain station when she was struck by an RCMP cruiser being driven by an on-duty member.

Presiding coroner Vincent Stancato and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death. While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.

An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
