BC Coroners Service announces inquest into police-involved death

VICTORIA - The BC Coroners Service has announced an inquest into the death of Christopher Leslie Kampman.

The inquest is scheduled to begin on April 15, 2013, at the BC Coroners Service courtroom in Burnaby.

Mr. Kampman, aged 37, went into medical distress in the back of a police cruiser after being arrested for trespassing in Abbotsford in the early hours of July 1, 2011.

Mr. Kampman was transferred to Abbotsford Regional Hospital where, despite the efforts of hospital staff, he was pronounced deceased on July 2, 2011.

Presiding coroner Vincent Stancato and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death. While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.

An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.

Date: April 15 - 19, 2013

Time: 9 a.m.

Place: 20th Floor, Metrotower II, 4720 Kingsway, Burnaby
