Statement on Shooting at Canadian Border

VICTORIA – Justice Minister and Attorney General Shirley Bond issued the following statement following this afternoon’s shooting at the Douglas Crossing:

“I was saddened to hear reports of the incident at the Peace Arch Crossing this afternoon. I want to express my most heartfelt wishes for the border guard who was injured in this incident.

“I know the prayers of British Columbians are with the injured officer and her family and friends. This tragic event is obviously also very upsetting for her colleagues, for police who are investigating and indeed for any witnesses.

“Premier Clark and Governor Gregoire have spoken about the tragic incident and reaffirmed our shared commitment to a safe and peaceful border. They agreed to co-operate, with both our federal partners, to support and protect the men and women who protect our shared crossing.

“This incident reminds us of the potential danger faced every day by law enforcement members whose work keeps our communities safe. I am informed that the RCMP are conducting a full criminal investigation and they will use all available resources, which includes working with their colleagues in Washington State.”
