Malfunction of Port Mann gantry crane under investigation
VANCOUVER – At approximately 8:30 a.m. on February 10, the yellow construction gantry (truss) used to install precast deck sections on the north approach of the new Port Mann Bridge experienced a malfunction and is leaning south, toward the cable-stay section of the bridge.
Immediately following the incident, the contractor cleared and secured the affected location and notified the appropriate local officials and authorities. There were no injuries. The site and the gantry are secure.
At the time of the malfunction, a precast concrete deck segment fell into the Fraser River. This area of the river was closed to boats and marine users at the time because there was work happening above.
The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project contractor, Kiewit/Flatiron, is undertaking a full investigation to determine precisely how this malfunction occurred. This investigation will also determine if this malfunction will have any impact on the construction schedule for the new Port Mann Bridge. Bridge engineers were on site today to begin their assessments.
WorkSafeBC will also conduct an investigation.
An update will be provided as new information becomes available.
