VICTORIA – Jane Morley, QC, has been appointed B.C.’s children and youth officer effective May 1, Attorney General Geoff Plant said today.
Morley has practised law in B.C. since 1975. She represented the province in the inquiry into the death of Matthew Vaudreuil conducted by Judge Thomas Gove. In recent years, she has focused on mediation and public policy. In 2001, she reviewed the children’s commission for the Ministry of the Attorney General. She is president of the Mediation Roster Society of British Columbia.
The office for children and youth came into existence September 30, 2002, to take on various roles previously distributed between the children’s commission and the child, youth and family advocate. The officer is accountable to the Attorney General and responsible for:
· Providing support for children, youth and families in obtaining government services. · Providing independent advice to government and communities about the effectiveness, responsiveness and relevance of those services. · Monitoring government services in relation to relevant government legislation and standards.
