RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE RURAL EDUCATION TASK FORCE

 


Recommendation 1:  Recognize the contributions of rural schools.

       

Recommendation 2:  Make the improvement of rural-urban equity of educational outcomes a Ministry of Education priority.

 

Recommendation 3:  Create the provincial vision for rural education by focusing on how to foster equitable student achievement in all areas of the province.

     

            Recommendation 4: Invest in the continuous instructional improvement and success of rural educators through professional development and teacher training.

                                                                             

            Recommendation 5:  Work with education partners to build a network of rural educators and leaders.

           

Recommendation 6:  Produce a planning document that enables teachers to adapt the curriculum (Integrated Resource Packages) to reflect the needs of multi-grade classrooms and the strengths of rural environments.

 

Recommendation 7:  Encourage partnerships and co-ordination across social service agencies to support students in communities undergoing economic hardship.

 

Recommendation 8:  Enable creative solutions to reduce school operations costs.

 

Recommendation 9:  Facilitate the provision of increased educational opportunities for students and educators by considering more flexible, balanced approaches to designing school calendars and timetables.

 

Recommendation 10:  Utilize shared services among school districts, in regions and within small communities to find cost savings.  Use the savings to support rural education.

 

Recommendation 11:  Build local capacity in accessing grants, federal funding and corporate partnerships that could provide additional funding to rural schools.

 

      Recommendation 12:  Increase public understanding of the funding allocation system and the unique geographic factors.

 

Recommendation 13:  Review the funding of rural schools.


 

Recommendation 14:  Increase learning options for rural students and educators through technological solutions.

 

Recommendation 15:  Deliver services to rural special needs students through the development of partnerships and creative solutions.

 

Recommendation 16:  Seek models for the delivery of education to young children in remote rural communities as an alternative to school closure.

                 

Recommendation 17:  Encourage greater co-operation between school districts and First Nations groups and parents.

 

Recommendation 18:  Increase connections with all parents, including those of students who currently receive public education through an alternate delivery system, such as home schooling.

                 

Recommendation 19:  Build on the strength of volunteerism in rural communities.
