NEW PROGRAM TO IMPROVE TEACHING PERFORMANCE

VICTORIA – A new supervision program will help improve classroom teaching by building stronger relationships between teachers and principals, Education Minister Christy Clark said today.

“It’s important that we support principals and teachers to build the best possible working relationships,” said Clark. “Better relationships will improve teaching performance, which is key to increasing student achievement.”

Government will provide $60,000 to the B.C. Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association to train principals to better support teachers and promote quality teaching.

“The program was piloted successfully in Prince Rupert, and we are confident that it will assist principals and vice-principals to meet their responsibilities to ensure quality instruction in all schools,” said Bob Lindsay, president of the B.C. Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association.

Components of the program include:

·        Building Learning Communities – This will encourage educators to work together to improve student achievement. Educators will form groups to share best practices.

·        Coaching and Mentoring – This will support teachers who want or need to develop new skills. Experienced and proven teachers will act as role models for beginning teachers and help with such things as managing classrooms and teaching lessons.

·        Correcting Teaching Behaviours – This will clarify the management role of principals. Training will enhance principals’ skills in assessing classroom teachers’ performance and directing change.

“Parents, teachers and principals want to feel confident that B.C. students are getting a quality education, and that’s what this plan will help ensure,” said Clark.

The new program supports government’s New Era commitment to ensure a quality education for all B.C. students, with a focus on continual improvement in student achievement.
