VICTORIA – British Columbians on income assistance with language barriers can now enrol in the new English as a Second Language (ESL) Training for Jobs Program to assist them in finding and maintaining employment.
“We recognize that many of our clients whose first language is not English are motivated to start working, but they are frustrated by their lack of work skills, as well as by their language barriers,” said Minister of Human Resources Murray Coell. “This new program will help to remove these barriers so clients can look forward to leaving income assistance, and finding good jobs as quickly as possible.”
The ESL Training for Jobs Program will provide short-term English language instruction, skills training and work experience needed for specific jobs.
“We’re committed to ensuring that clients who are able to work are given every opportunity to do so,” said Coell. “ESL Training is the latest addition to our suite of training and job programs that provide individuals with the skills needed to get and keep a job.”
The program will be operated by three agencies in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Regions. The three participating agencies are: · Immigrant Services Society · SUCCESS · MOSAIC
Programs offered by these agencies started earlier this month.
