NEW INITIATIVE TO HELP BRITISH COLUMBIANS ACHIEVE GOALS

VANCOUVER Premier Gordon Campbell today unveiled a new initiative aimed at helping all British Columbians achieve their goals, by providing a window to information from early childhood development to lifelong learning, career planning and job training.

“Achieve BC is about bringing out the best in all of us,” Campbell said. “Whether it’s new parents wanting to give their children a healthy start in life, workers striving to be the best in their profession, or students planning for future opportunities – all of us want to be the best we can. And all of us need help to achieve our goals.

“Now there is an important new tool that pulls together educational resources for parents and students of all ages, with a wealth of tips, knowledge and information that respond to their needs. With this initiative, we are making it easier for all British Columbians to find new ways and new support to reach their highest ambitions.”

For example, parents of newborns and toddlers have said they would like advice on nutrition, diet, health and safety. Parents of students want better information on each public school in B.C., learning standards for each grade and how they can help their children. Students want easier access to information on post-secondary institutions, programs offered, financial assistance and new career opportunities. And workers want to know where they can go for information on job training or starting their own business.

Achieve BC is designed to help meet these needs, with a single-window to tips, tools and information that is unique in Canada, delivered through a range of new services including a comprehensive Web site, publications, a 1-800 number and information displays.

“This initiative is an important new step in our vision for promoting and realizing achievement in all we do,” Campbell said. “However, it’s only a first step. We want to know what else the province can provide to help. We’ll be encouraging all users to give us their ideas, advice and suggestions on how to make Achieve BC ever-more relevant to their needs.”
