Gary Filmon served as Premier of Manitoba for 11 years, and has 25 years of experience in public office. He was Minister of Environment in 1981, and served as chair of the Manitoba Roundtable on Sustainable Development.
During his tenure as premier, Manitoba suffered the worst wildfires in the province’s history in the summer of 1989. The province’s response included the evacuation of thousands of residents in northern Manitoba and the co-ordination of interdepartmental efforts, including working in close conjunction with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre in Winnipeg. Filmon was also premier during the Red River flooding of 1997.
Filmon holds a master’s degree in civil engineering, and currently works as a consultant with The Exchange Group.
