NURSING REGULATIONS INTRODUCED

VICTORIA – The government is launching consultations to seek public input on proposed changes to regulations governing nurses in British Columbia.

Draft regulations have been released that would include:

·         Replacing the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia with a College of Registered Nurses.

·         Establishing the scope of practice for nursing, including the reserved actions that may be performed by registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs).

·         Introducing regulation of NPs by the new college.

These changes would designate nursing by RNs as a health profession under the Health Professions Act (HPA). In addition, NPs would be formally recognised for the first time within the nursing profession in British Columbia.

The HPA specifies that there be a three-month period of public consultation before any proposed changes are enacted.
