PREMIER’S REMARKS AT THE CABINET SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

Premier Gordon Campbell

Check Against Delivery

I’d like to say a special thank you to those who served in the executive council over the past two and a half years. Their commitment to public life, and their families’ commitment to public life, has helped us through a number of critical reforms that laid a foundation for sustainable economic growth and social renewal.

Working with our caucus today, we are building on their work with a cabinet that brings new talent to the table - a cabinet that brings added focus to investment and job creation and renews our dedication to creating exceptional public services that lead the country.

Our new ministers of state for mining, forestry operations and resort development will bring added energy to the resource industries that were the critical foundation of our past, and are the foundation of our future.

Our new ministers of state for women’s and seniors’ services, and immigration and multicultural services will bring important new voices to cabinet in those areas. The Minister of State for Mental Health and Addiction Services maintains our focus on one of society’s greatest challenges.

We have new leaders in cabinet for education and for small business and economic development. We have proven leaders in every area of public endeavour.

My Deputy Premier will take on the task of improving service delivery for children and families. Over the next year, the important initiatives already underway will be advanced in a way that better protects our children while strengthening our families.

Nine ministers will remain in their current capacities. All will build on the fine work that has been done as agents of positive change in challenging times.

British Columbia has always been a province that’s been driven by dreams. It is the job of this cabinet and my government to help liberate our province’s potential for the betterment of all British Columbians. It is our goal and our duty to draw upon every resource available to build on the spirit of 2010 and the spirit of British Columbia. That is what today is all about.

As we expand our imaginations, our commitment and our aspirations, this cabinet will reach across our province. It will deliver on the dreams and the leadership of British Columbians in health care and education, and economic development and environmental stewardship.

It will continue to liberate the economic opportunities that allow us to fulfill a full range of social obligations to people and families in every region of British Columbia.

Our government has done a lot in the last two and a half years. But there is much still to do as British Columbians set their sights on new goals that are now within our reach. We will continue to act boldly and decisively for our children, our families and our communities, for taxpayers, working families and all those who build this province. When errors are made, we will correct them. When opportunities appear, we will pursue them. This is a team that is driven by a dream to make British Columbia the best that it can possibly be.

I want to say thank you to all of those who serve on the executive council, and their families, for the commitment that you will make in the months and the years ahead. And I want to say thank you to British Columbians for continuing to work to reach the height of our great goals as a province. Now, it’s time for us all to get to work.
