PREMIER OFFERS CONDOLENCES AND AID FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS

VICTORIA – Premier Gordon Campbell today expressed condolences and support for those impacted by the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunamis that claimed tens of thousands of lives in southern Asia and Africa on Sunday.

“This is a tragedy on a scale so profound that it touches all of us, but especially those with ties to the countries affected by this disaster,” Campbell said. “On behalf of all British Columbians, I extend solemn condolences to those who have lost friends and family, and hopes and prayers for those still waiting for confirmation that their loved ones are safe.

“As a multicultural community with a vibrant South Asian community, B.C. has deep connections with the part of the world most affected by the earthquake and tsunamis. Those ties are something all British Columbians take pride in celebrating together, and today they bring us together in mourning for those lost and those who are struggling to overcome this devastating tragedy.

“I know all British Columbians share a deep commitment and desire to provide aid and assistance to the impacted regions. I know many have already shown exceptional generosity and kindness by making personal donations to international aid organizations, and I hope those who can will continue to show their support for those working to bring relief to the region.

“In addition, today I am announcing an aid package of $8 million to go directly to the Canadian Red Cross to provide immediate assistance to the region. As Canada’s gateway province to the Pacific Rim, it is important that British Columbia take a leadership role in providing assistance. This $8-million aid package will be used by international disaster relief experts at the Red Cross to provide assistance as quickly as is possible.”
