INCREASED FUNDING SUPPORTS WOMEN ESCAPING
VIOLENCE |
|
The provincial government is increasing annual funding by $12.5 million
starting April 1, 2005 for programs and services for women and their children
escaping violence and abuse.
The funding will be distributed as follows:

Description |

$5.1 million |
· Support 24/7 accessibility at transition houses. ·
Increase safe
shelter by adding beds to existing transition houses, supporting beds in new
ones and funding new safe home programs. |

$600,000 |
·
Ensure that transition houses have a staff person dedicated to working
with children to help them cope with trauma. ·
Thirty-five transition houses that do not currently provide this service
will receive funding. |

$2 million |
·
Expand existing counselling
programs and create new counselling services
for women and children. |
|
$1.6 million |
·
Expansion of outreach work to bring violence
prevention programs to all communities, with a focus on rural and remote
communities. |
|
$700,000 |
·
Training for front-line workers to help them better deal with the
complex issues around violence. Training will also provide continuity when
staff are liasing with police, the justice system, social workers and human
resources staff. |
|
$2 million |
·
New programs and projects to
address violence against women, with a focus on seniors, immigrant and
visible minority women, women with disabilities and aboriginal women to help
meet their special needs. |
|
$500,000 |
·
Create a mentoring program to
ensure that women who have never been in the workforce or who are re-entering
it after a long absence have support in moving toward independence. |
